I recently heard the new Selena Gomez song on the radio. Look at these lyrics: "You ain’t gotta worry it’s an open invitation. I’ll be sittin’ right here real patient. All day all night I’ll be waitin’ standby. Can’t stop because I love it, hate the way I love you."
Why does no one understand what this is doing to our girls?! The message is, "Your life isn't important. Just sit around and wait for a guy no matter if it is making you hate yourself." It actually makes me angry. Angry that my little girls have to grow up and THAT'S who they are told to look up to. Now, I wasn’t really sure who Selena Gomez is. That may make me sound really out of touch, but oh well.
I’d heard that she’s dating Justin Beiber. I actually try very hard to know as little about Justin Beiber as possible...
Anyway, Selena Gomez was a Disney Channel superstar. A role model to little girls who watched her shows. But now she is saying she wants to be more “grown up”, and this is her foray into a more adult music scene. Uh huh. Cause all the grown-ups I know behave like this. Yep. That’s how I met my husband, by being a mindless, self-hating zombie just waiting for him to tell me what to do with my life. Point is, NO woman of any age should behave this way, but since the 13-year-olds who listen to her music don’t yet realize this, they are being influenced by these lyrics. They may not even know this consciously but subconsciously, these messages are getting through.
Check out this episode of Doc Zone on CBC. http://www.cbc.ca/doczone/episode/sext-up-kids.html It’s an eye-opener to what an over-sexualized culture is doing to our children. Our children need protecting. We’re the parents, and that’s our job. We can’t leave it up to anyone else.
